SCU Department of Yoga & Meditation Successfully Hosts 2025 Hatha & Soma Yoga Open Class
On Saturday, April 12, the Department of Yoga & Meditation successfully held the 2025 Yoga Open Class. The event featured practical sessions from the Spring 2025 semester courses ? Soma Yoga and Hatha Yoga ? which were opened to all current students of the university, offering them an opportunity to experience yoga firsthand beyond just the enrolled participants.

The Hatha Yoga sessions were conducted by Professor Oh Juwon from the Department of Yoga & Meditation over two Saturdays ? March 22 and April 12. Professor Oh is currently the director of Yogahari Studio and holds a bachelor's degree in Yoga Therapy from Swami Vivekananda Yoga University in India, as well as a Master of Arts in Integrated Yoga Studies from Dongguk University.
The Soma Yoga sessions were led by Professor Jang Jisook on two Sundays ? March 30 and April 6. Professor Jang is the director of Soma Yoga & Anatomy Studio and oversees professional training courses at the Soma Coaching Research Institute.
Meanwhile, the newly established Department of Yoga & Meditation, launched in 2025, aims to cultivate professional experts through evidence-based healing yoga and meditation programs led by renowned professors in their respective fields.
In the field of yoga, Professor Lee Georyong earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in Indian Philosophy in India and previously served as Vice President and Dean of the Graduate School of Integrative Medicine at Seoul Buddhist Graduate University. He currently teaches chakra meditation, focusing on techniques that promote harmony between the mind and body.
In the field of meditation, Professor Ahn Heeyoung, Director of the Korean MBSR Mindfulness Institute, studied directly under Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, the founder of MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction), and is recognized as the first certified Korean MBSR expert.
Additionally, Venerable Iljung, who practiced Buddhist meditation for ten years in Sri Lanka, leads Buddhist meditation classes. Professor Jang Jisook, who systematized Soma Yoga in Korea, also plays a key role in the department.
