Dr. Sarah Meharg visited Korea for giving a workshop in international peacekeeping, hosted by SCU and sponsored by the Korea NGO Council for Overseas Cooperation and the Canadian Embassy to Seoul. Dr. Meharg is an adjunct professor at Royal Military College of Canada and senior trainer at Canada Forces College. She is an expert in rebuilding of community in global crisis. This is an interview with Sarah on the role of women in international conflict resolution, e-learning status in Canada, and her workshop experience. 

◆ How did you become interested in international peacekeeping? 

: I majored in landscape architecture in university. As an exchange student, I visited different countries in Europe, which led me to learn about the aftermath of the first and second World Wars. After graduating, I did an internship at Pearson Peacekeeping Center, where I met officials in charge of peacekeeping and peacebuilding; this was a turning point in my life. I then enrolled at the Military Academy, where I studied about restoration. Now, I am involved in guiding peacekeepers and peacebuilding officials to exercise their full potentials in their fields. 

◆ What is the role of women in peacekeeping in global crisis and how are the Canadian government and military contributing to this?

: Researches of the past 15 years demonstrated that when women had been involved in the process of conflict resolution the rate of success increased by 35%. Based on this finding, the Canadian government created the feminist foreign policy to enable women in developing countries to participate in the process of negotiation, mediation, and field monitoring that are needed for policy making for peacekeeping and peacebuilding. 

Canadian military is a strong supporter of this process; women soldiers receive special training to expand their capacity in the field of international peacekeeping. 

◆ SCU is a leading online university in Korea. How is the e-learning system run in your workplace, Royal Military College of Canada and at Canada Forces College? 

E-learning system has been widely applied for deployed soldiers across the world since 2000. It is used to aid soldiers to study without constraints of time, location, and military circumstances. 

◆ How would you describe your experience at SCU?

: I would like to thank SCU and other supporting organizations that made this workshop happen. I thank Dr. Marshall Conley and Dr. Kwon, who mutually cooperated for this opportunity, and participants who showed great passion. I am very impressed by the beautiful campus of SCU, excellence of the faculty, and the highly advanced infrastructure of education at SCU. I would like to share my experience at SCU in other future workshops I will hold.
