The SCU Virtual Reality Laboratory (VR Lab) opening ceremony was held at 3pm on November 17, 2020. The VR-based stress mitigation program offered by the Lab is expected to help faculty members and students significantly.

The VR-based stress mitigation program was participated in by SCU’s Special Psychotherapy Department and Family Coaching and Counseling Department.

As a 4-year undergraduate course with integrated special psychotherapy as major, SCU’s Special Psychotherapy was newly established for the first time in Korea. It teaches diverse professional psychotherapy skills utilizing media. It is designed to foster talents equipped with integrated discerning eyes by studying diverse subjects related to psychotherapy techniques and experiencing clinical practice based on psychology theories. It applies new paradigm-oriented teaching methods focusing on the enhancement of problem-solving ability. In particular, it offers education courses and issues a certificate for practicing psychotherapy using Virtual Reality, an essential media in the 4th industrial revolution era.

The Family Coaching and Counseling Department was established for the undergraduate course in 2008 for the first time in Korea. Offering a systematic education course combining coaching counseling and psychological counseling based on family counseling science, it focuses on the development of a healthy relationship among family members by inducing changes to their interactions. In particular, VR is utilized to resolve smoothly pending tasks in relations among family members and to help them express their feelings and yearnings.

VR-based stress mitigation is a 30-minute program for alleviating stress by stabilizing mind and body through three courses of CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) breathing method, VR contents, and physical relaxation using massage chair. First, the CBT breathing method is practiced for five minutes to help maintain balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves.

Second, VR contents are practiced for 15 minutes. Wearing a VR equipment, you can experience a virtual reality video of the natural environment including woods, sea, and snow and music. Lastly, physical relaxation using massage chair is practiced for 10 minutes to help stabilize mind and body.

This stress mitigation program is designed for not only the emotional workers but also any general workers who experience depression (Corona Blue), anger (Corona Red), and lethargy and despair (Corona Black).

This VR-based stress mitigation program is slated to be used for stabilizing mind and body of emotional workers among students as well for enhancing the welfare of faculty members by reducing their stress and promoting physical and emotional stability. SCU students can also get significant help from this program when they are stressed due to Corona Blue, Red, and Black.
