The Department of Applied Music is gearing up for the 2024 first-half admissions with a special offline lecture by Professor Kim Hyung-seok, a prominent figure in the country's music production scene, scheduled for January 27th (Saturday) at 2:00 PM.

While targeted at current and prospective students of our university, the special lecture is inclusive, allowing anyone to participate. Professor Kim Hyung-seok will share insights on "Code Composition Tips" at Tchaikovsky Hall, A Building 4th floor. Registration is available on the Applied Music Department's website.

Professor Kim Hyung-seok, who has composed numerous hit songs, is a prominent South Korean songwriter and producer. He is registered with the Korea Music Copyright Association for over 1,200 songs, including major hits like Kim Kwang-seok's "For the Reason Called Love," Insooni's "Separation Practice," Sung Si-kyung's "Like the First Time," and Kim Gun-mo's "To You Again." Additionally, he has produced soundtracks for around 20 dramas, including the drama "All In."

The Applied Music Department (headed by Professor Choi Jeong-han) boasts an outstanding faculty, including professors who graduated from Berklee College of Music and reputable U.S. universities. With the best curriculum developed through their research, the department aims to cultivate leading professionals in the field of practical music, including popular music. They maximize the advantages of online classes through systematic theoretical instruction and combine it with various offline activities to provide practical lessons, aspiring to nurture musicians who play a proactive role in all aspects of applied music. The department particularly focuses on training singer-songwriters who can engage in individual producing, covering research, composition, recording, and music production. It aims to equip students with essential skills for the digital, untact era, emphasizing the concept of individual producing, which involves handling the entire process of creating a music piece, from lyrics, composition, and arrangement to singing, playing, computer music work, recording, mixing, and mastering.

Since 2021, the department has been organizing an annual music release competition for current students. Each year, two original compositions are selected, providing students with the opportunity to produce music and fostering professionals in various fields of practical music, including popular music. Those selected in the competition have the chance to collaborate with professors from the Applied Music Department. They undergo professional arrangements, recording sessions with top-notch domestic musicians, and mixing/mastering processes with high-level engineers. Ultimately, the chosen compositions are officially released as music tracks. The 2024 Music Production Challenge is open for submissions until February 26th. For detailed information, you can visit the Applied Music Department's website.
